Original unsigned manuscript page from Emerson’s handwritten Journal, 4.75 x 7.5, circa July 1873. The extract, which includes one of the most notable passages from Emerson’s Journal, concerns the “secret of poetry.” In full (passage immediately preceding provided for context): “[The secret of poetry is never explained—is always new. We have not got farther than mere wonder at] the delicacy of the touch & the eternity it inherits, achieves. In every house a child that in mere play utters oracles, & knows not that they are such, Tis as easy as breath. Tis like [struck out: this] gravity which holds the universe together & none knows what it is. See ST. p.” Emerson has also “struck out” the page with a diagonal squiggle. The page, expertly inlaid to a slightly larger sheet, was evidently bound into the “Author’s Centenary Edition” of Emerson’s writings, issued in 1903–04 in an edition of 600 sets, each including an original manuscript page; the present item is accompanied by the limitation page and portrait engraving from one set.
