Can’t be all bad: As he works to conclude his “present opus,” Fields shows a soft spot for a deserving youngster

TLS, one page, 7.5 x 9.5, personal letterhead, July 31, 1941. Fields writes to Bob Novak at Young & Rubicam. In part: “I read the material written by Thomas Dalton of New Jersey and I think he has great possibilities. He has a fine sense of humor. His material should be grabbed and with minor changes be adapted for use on screen, radio, and in the theatre. I am about to conclude the final scenes of my present opus and I am sorry I cannot give more time and space to eulogize this youngster. I shall keep him in mind and do whatever is in my power to promote his success….” The “present opus” Fields refers to is evidently Never Give a Sucker an Even Break, released in October of the same year. Matted and framed to an overall size of 13 x 15. Light show-through of mounting remnants at corners (well away from text and signature, otherwise fine condition. PSA/DNA Auction LOA and R&R COA.
