Description

Two weeks after her marriage, the former Beatrix Potter settles in at her beloved farm: “It is rather to soon to leave the disconsolate Wm. People are sure to say we have quarreled!”

ALS signed “Beatrix Heelis,” one page both sides, 7 x 4.5, October 28, 1913. Potter (using her married name) writes from Hilltop Farm, Sawrey to Mrs. Martin. In part: “I wonder whether you would mind telling me what you paid for the ‘Bungalow’?… I am sure Flemings must know what Mrs. Hutchinson asks, but they are so densely ignorant that I have an amused suspicion there may be an intention to ‘try it on!’ We are very comfortable here, but it is too hard work for the farm women for any length of time, & the cottage is so far off ready—I thought I could manage at the Bungalow for a fortnight or so, to help the time on. It is a nice little house, but rather plain in winter.… I am going to London this next week … as my mother is changing servants. It is rather soon to leave the disconsolate Wm. People are sure to say we have quarrelled!…” Financially secure as the result of her success in publishing, Potter, aided by solicitor William Heelis, used her royalties to purchase a farm and several surrounding parcels of land in the village of Sawrey, Cumbria. The two were married on October 14, 1913, and settled on Potter’s farm, which she named Hill Top. Intersecting mailing folds (vertical fold to “a” of first name) and scattered foxing (not affecting legibility), otherwise fine condition. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
