German writer, scientist, and philosopher (1749–1832) who takes a place among the central intellectual and artistic figures of his day. His poetry and dramatic works provided source material for Beethoven, Schubert, and Berlioz, among others. Scarce LS in German, signed “J. W. Goethe,” one page, 8.5 x 10, January 6, 1830. Goethe writes to an unidentified recipient, thanking him for and reciprocating New Year’s wishes. In very good condition, with intersecting folds, light irregular toning, mild soiling and wrinkling, and scattered staining (large ink stain to blank margin at lower left, with small associated corrosion losses), and light spotting touching last few letters of signature, not affecting legibility.
