Recognized as one of the true icons of horror cinema, and the actor most closely identified with the general public’s perception of the “monster” from the classic Mary Shelley book Frankenstein. Vintage glossy 7 x 9 photo of a relaxed (and patient!) Karloff holding a cigarette while having his Frankenstein monster makeup applied by Jack Pierce, signed “Best Wishes, Boris Karloff” in blue ballpoint. Photo is matted and framed to an overall size of 11 x 14. Jack Pierce was the make-up artist for Universal Pictures during the heyday of the now classic horror films (he did all the “horror” makeup from 1931-1943). He created the world-famous Frankenstein monster, the Mummy, the Wolfman, and many other famous characters. Pierce worked for four months on Frankenstein, making hundreds of sketches and models. In fine condition, with a horizontal crease to the image, a small crease in the upper right border, signature light but legible due to light background and minor skipping of ink. Great photo and wonderful piece of Hollywood history! PSA/DNA Auction LOA and R&R COA.
