Signed and inscribed on a front blank, “à Henry McBride bien cordialement, Henri Matisse, 12 Juill. 37.” McBride (1867–1962) was a prominent American art critic who avidly championed the modernist movement and who had earlier written a book on Matisse. The inside front cover bears the McBride Estate label. The book is in very good condition, with toning, light soiling, and chips to covers, and front cover detached.
