Description

Writing to Colonel Huntington in 1776: “Is your Regiment on the march?”

The only colonial governor to side with the Americans during the Revolutionary War (1710–1785). Washington referred to him as “Brother Jonathan.” War-dated ALS signed “Jonth. Trumbull,” one page, 8 x 11.25, March 29, 1776. Trumbull writes to Revolutionary War Colonel (later General) Jedediah Huntington. In part: “Roger informs of your arrival at Norwich soon after my leaving Town; I failed of seeing you as I could wish; tho’ our meeting must have occasioned both grievous and joyful passions.… Is your regiment on the march, have many questions to ask, which must be omitted ’till have the opportunity to have them answered…” Accompanied by the detached original address panel, which has been affixed to a same-sized piece of heavier stock. In good to very good condition, with scattered toning (mainly to top margin), and a few chips, tears, and separations (mainly marginal and repaired from reverse; clean tear at bottom edge touching one letter of last name). The signature is otherwise unaffected, and the writing is clear and dark throughout. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
