“Drinks are on me”: Three decades before his alcohol-induced death, Holden celebrates the signing of a new contract

Highly regarded American actor (1918–1981) who won the 1954 Academy Award for Best Actor in Stalag 17 and who delivered particularly memorable performances in such classics as Sunset Boulevard and Network. Holden expired at the age of 63 when, suffering a fall and gashing his head while intoxicated, he bled to death. TLS signed “Bill Holden,” one page, 5.5 x 8.5, Paramount Pictures letterhead, October 15, 1951. Holden writes to Otis Mathis. In full: “In celebration of signing new contract, the drinks are on me.” Accompanied by the original transmittal envelope. A few faint wrinkles, otherwise fine, fresh condition. R&R COA.
