Description

British surgeon (1853–1923) who saved Edward VII’s life with an emergency appendectomy shortly before the coronation and who served as the personal physician to “Elephant Man” John Merrick. Two ALSs, 1888 and 1898, mentioning treatment that includes an inclined plane and a splint in the first, and inquiring about the rent for a stable in the second. The first letter is in fair condition, with soiling, tears, creases, and glue remnants to reverse of second (affecting signature); the second is fine, with mild handling wear. R&R COA.
