Rockne not only made Notre Dame the country’s leading football center, but also revolutionized football theory, stressing offense, organizing the precision backfield of Notre Dame shift, perfecting line play, and developing many stars, including the most famous backfield of all time, the “Four Horsemen of Notre Dame.” He died in a plane crash at the age of forty-three. TLS signed “K. K. Rockne,” one page, 5 x 3, no date. Rockne sends his regrets for not being able to meet an admirer. In full, “I just returned a day or so ago and your note was forwarded to me from Utah. Am sorry I did not get to see you and shake hands with you. I am sure I would have enjoyed meeting you.” In fine condition, with intersecting folds, typed collector’s notations to bottom, punch holes to left edge and slight mounting remnants to two corners.
