DS, in Russian, one page, 7 x 10, June 23, 1955. List of the members of the scholar council for the Institute of Physics, listing the fifteen members, with twelve signing next to their names. Signers are: Pyotr Kapitsa (Nobel Prize winner in 1978), N. E. Alekseevsky, E. M. Liphshitz, Lev Landau (Nobel Prize Winner in 1962), M. P. Malkov, E. B. Obreemov, V. P. Peshkov, P. G. Strelkov, V. A. Fock, V. T. Hozyaenov, E. M. Halatnikov, and A. E. Shalnikov. Also signed at the conclusion by the vice chairman of the Scholar Council, M. P. Malkov. Double matted to an overall size of 13 x 16. In late 1945 and early 1946, a group of prominent Soviet scientists, including in particular the future Nobel Prize winner Pyotr Kapitsa, lobbied the government for the creation of a higher educational institution radically different from the type established in the Soviet system of higher education. Applicants, carefully selected by challenging examinations and personal interviews, would be taught by, and work together with, prominent scientists. Each student would follow a personalized curriculum created to match his or her particular areas of interest and specialization.
