In part: “I very greatly regret that I have been compelled at the last moment to forego the pleasure of visiting Delhi. As you have been advised, my indisposition is very slight but yet one which requires my remaining off of my feet entirely, to bring about an immediate response in the way of a cure. I feel rather keenly about having to disappoint you at the last moment, particularly since I know you have made extensive plans for affording me a most pleasant time….” After signing, FDR adds a handwritten postscript: “I will come some day!” Roosevelt was first diagnosed with polio in 1921 and struggled with recurring symptoms for the remainder of his life. Hunter has added a few small notations to the letter, including “Visit made: August, 1930.” Additional notations as described above, a few creases (light vertical crease touching last name), and scattered light soiling, otherwise fine condition.
