Barnum the teetotaler: “There had [been] much trouble with drinking actors & Mr. Levick is a noble exception in that line.”

Flamboyant showman whose exotic exhibits included midget Tom Thumb, Swedish Nightingale Jenny Lind, and the counterfeit Feejee Mermaid. ALS, one page, 5 x 7.5, personal letterhead, May 27, 1868. Letter to Mr. Wood about a previous stage manager. In part, “The best stage manager we had for years was M. Levick. He is very industrious…and he is reliable in every way, for his habits are unexceptionable. There had [been] much trouble with drinking actors & Mr. Levick is a noble exception in that line.” In good condition, with scattered toning and soiling, several partial separations along folds, letter affixed to an identical size sheet, some light foxing and two small pencil notations to top.
