Description

Wilde’s elderly ex-lover sends a poem of his own

British writer (1870–1945) who first came to prominence in the 1890s as the young intimate companion of Oscar Wilde. After Douglas’ father, Lord Queensbury, accused Wilde of being a “somdomite” [sic], Wilde filed the libel lawsuit that led to his own conviction and two-year prison term. ALS signed “Alfred Douglas,” one page both sides, 5.75 x 7, black-bordered personal letterhead, no date [1940s]. Douglas writes to an unnamed gentleman. In full: “I don’t know exactly what you want but I have copied out this sonnet of mine for you. It originally appeared in 1941 in the Daily Mail & an autograph copy of it was sold … for £9.00 & another copy for £15 at the Bazaar in aid of Yugo-Slavia.” Tiny marginal edge tear, otherwise very fine, fresh condition. R&R COA.
