Description

The matter with kids today: Steinbeck laments the “treacle flattery” of his “snotty” young correspondents

TLS signed “J. S.,” one page, 8.5 x 11, personal letterhead, November 19, 1964. Steinbeck writes to “N. P.” In part: “The letters from school children make me despair of our educational system. And apparently we are not getting by very well with our signiture [sic] stamp. They get pretty snotty about that. I think what makes me the maddest is that they think they have a right to make these demands, although they, at least some of them try spreading on the treacle flattery…. Books sent to Russia by State are still coming back…. But the Russian matter has taken another turn. In appriciation [sic] for my book, Russian writers are now sending me their books, (in Russian). It is very joyful…. I just got most exciting news. My new dog has been chosen and is being trained. He is eighteen months old, a large pure white English bull terrier, chosen not only for looks and beauty but for character and disposition, a very strong dog and not quarrelsome….” Accompanied by a copy of a Saturday Review article about the correspondence “troubles” Steinbeck alludes to in the letter. In fine condition. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
