Description

NOT ON MY WATCH: LINCOLN promotes a lieutenant less than two weeks before a scuttled Confederate invasion of Washington

Partially printed DS as president, one page, 15.5 x 19.25, July 1, 1864. A military promotion for Charles Meinhold as First Lieutenant in the Third Regiment of Cavalry. Countersigned by Edwin Stanton as Secretary of War. Less than two weeks later, on July 11, rebel troops raided the Washington suburbs with the intention of capturing the Capital itself; seeing the massed Federal reinforcements, the Confederates retreated the next day. In very good condition, with intersecting folds (one fold through signature), light scattered soiling and wrinkling with small stains at corners, small losses to paper seal, and signature on the light side but fully legible. The blue seal is mostly intact, but cracked horizotally, and Lincoln’s signature is a couple shades light. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
