Description

EXECUTIVE MEETS JUDICIAL: JOHN ADAMS land grant for a veteran, countersigned by soon-to-be Chief Justice JOHN MARSHALL

Partially printed DS, signed “John Adams” as president and “J[ohn] Marshall” as secretary of state, one page on vellum, 13.25 x 14.75, September 4, 1800. A document granting a 1,200-acre parcel of land to Thomas Lewis, assignee of “William Johnston, a Captain for seven years,” under the provisions of the Act of Congress of August 10, 1790 “to enable the Officers and Soldiers of the Virginia Line on Continental Establishment, to obtain titles to certain lands lying north-west of the River Ohio, between the Little Miami and Sciota.” Following a brief stint in the House of Representatives, Marshall (1755–1835) served as Adams’ Secretary of State from June 6, 1800 to March 4, 1801, slightly overlapping the beginning of his still-unmatched tenure of nearly 35 years as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. The embossed paper seal remains intact at lower left. “In very good condition, with heavy folds (one light horizontal fold touching Adams’ signature), scattered soiling and light staining, wrinkling, and a few small holes to body of document. Both signatures are large, clear, and otherwise unaffected. A scarce and notable combination of two of America’s most distinguished statesmen! Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
