Description

Cleveland waffles on an invitation from abolitionist T. W. Higginson, who commanded black troops in the Civil War: “I am by no means certain that my presence at Cambridge, would not breed other implications…from political friends which it would be hard to resist.”

Twenty-second (1885-1889) and twenty-fourth (1893-1897) President, he is the only one to serve two non-consecutive terms. ALS, three pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7, June 3, 1890. Letter to abolitionist and commander of black troops in the Civil War Thomas Wentworth Higginson (1823-1911) who is also credited as the discoverer and editor of Emily Dickinson’s poems. Cleveland responds to an invitation to attend a speech. In part: “When cleaning our house for the Summer your kind note of May 14th reappears; and I am uncertain whether or not I have replied to it. I should very much enjoy hearing Mr. Gilder and Bishop Potter [(1835-1908) American Protestant Episcopal bishop], and it would give me great pleasure …to see the friends I should encounter on the occasion you refer to. I have such an unaccountable longing…and absolute freedom from everything which has…color, that I really dread the little that would be expected of me if I accepted your invitation. And I am by no means certain that my presence at Cambridge, would not breed other implications…from political friends which it would be hard to resist. These suggestions of an excuse are frank if nothing more; and they assume such proportions in my mind that I do not feel that I can say I will be with you on the 26th. Thanking you for your kind remembrance of me.” In fine condition, with a bit of light soiling to front page and mounting remnants to reverse of second page. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
