Description

Inscribing to an Illinois senator

Ink signature, “Elias H. Kane from John Quincy Adams,” on an off-white 4.5 x 7.5 page. Also is included is an unsigned copy of Adams’ Oration on the Life and Character of Gilbert Motier de Lafayette (Washington, 1835). Kane (1794–1835) was an Illinois state politician who served as a U.S. senator from 1825 until his death. According to the consignor, Adams was abroad at the time the book was issued and evidently presigned a number of similar presentation pages. The signed page is in fine condition, with mild scattered soiling and a few faint spots, not affecting signature; the book is good, with staining, chipping, and edge wear to covers, tape repairs to hinges, scattered spotting and soiling to interior, and chip to top edge of title page. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
