Description

Early endorsement for a justice of the peace in Indiana Territory

Manuscript document, one page, 8 x 13, March 16, 1805, signed at the conclusion, “Please to make out a commission for the above named Cook, W. H. H.” The document is a recommendation by six justices of the peace (who have also signed) for the appointment of Nathaniel Cook as justice in the St. Francois settlement. Harrison was then the first governor of the Indiana Territory, a position he assumed after resigning from Congress in 1800. Among the other signers is Moses Austin (1761–1821), father of the famous Texas patriot and himself founder of the first Anglo-American settlement west of the Mississippi. In very good condition, with some light scattered spotting and toning (mainly along folds), and some professional reinforcement to fold ends on reverse. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
