Description

Birthday boy Tiffany praises a “notable ... example of the bookmaker’s art”

Founder of the great New York–based retail and design operation (1812–1902) that became legendary for its spectacular jewelry and decorative wares in metal, glass, and other materials. ALS signed “C. L. Tiffany,” two pages, 5 x 8, personal letterhead, March 5, 1897. Tiffany writes to Mr. Spaulding. In part: “I wish to express to you my deep appreciation of your many kindnesses in connection with my eighty-fifth birthday, especially for the publicity to Tiffany & Co., and more particularly for the beautiful book containing the report of your trip to the courts of Europe. Your dainty volume is in every way as notable an example of the bookmaker’s art as your mission abroad was a notable achievement in diplomacy.” In fine condition, with mailing fold touching the faintly-brushed signature, and small tear and marginal show-through from adhesive traces on reverse of second page. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA, and R&R COA.
