American businessman and manufacturer (1831–1901) who was one of several brothers who founded the Studebaker Corporation, one of the early giants of the automotive industry. Uncommon ALS signed “C. Studebaker,” four pages on two adjoining lightly-lined sheets, 5 x 8, November 25, 1872. Studebaker writes to his parents. In part: “I know you cannot be with us many years longer. My daily prayer is that you may be spared to us yet for a number of years, & that when you are called to leave us you may have a home in that … better world…. I visited Boston on Thursday and passed through the fire district, it was sad sight to behold, but it impressed upon me that all things are perishable in this world. While we are striving to build mansions on this earth that are perishable we should not neglect to prepare ourselves for that mansion above which endureth forever….” Studebaker goes on to describe a sermon he had recently heard. In fine condition, with light soiling and a few tiny spots. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
