Description

FROM MIDDLE EARTH TO THE GOLDEN GATE: Tolkien writes to a fan in the military

British author and scholar (1892–1973) whose Lord of the Rings trilogy became one of the towering classics of fantasy literature and inspired a series of successful and wildly popular films. Printed LS with typed salutation, signed “Best wishes! J. R. R. Tolkien” in the author’s distinctive calligraphic hand, one page, 5.25 x 7, personal letterhead, April 12, 1966. Tolkien writes to Sergeant James Ridolfo of the 1/69 Armor Battalion in San Francisco. In full: “Thank you very much for your kind letter. I am always pleased to hear from people who have read and enjoyed my books. I hope they will continue to give you pleasure.” Unobtrusive wrinkling to right half touching text and signature, and a hint of subtle soiling, otherwise fine condition. Uncommon! Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
