Description

Houston we have a medal: Apollo 13’s crew receives the Salmagundi Medal

Two days after launch, the Apollo Spacecraft was crippled by an explosion, causing the Service Module portion of the Apollo Command/Service Module to lose its oxygen and electrical power. The crew used the Lunar Module as a lifeboat in space. The crew endured difficult conditions due to severe constraints on power, cabin heat, and drinkable water, but successfully returned to Earth. Printed invitation, #298, 6 x 5, to attend a “reception awarding the Salmagundi Medal to the three Apollo 13 Astronauts,” held on June 2, 1970. Signed on the front in brown felt tip by James Lovell and Jack Swigert and in blue ballpoint by Fred Haise and Marilyn Lovell. In fine condition, with tape residue on reverse and a light spot of toning to center from adhesive residue on reverse. The Salmagundi Club, founded in 1871, is one of the oldest art organizations in America. In 1871, a small group of professional artists would gather on Saturday evening in the studio of sculptor J. Scott Hartley, where they critiqued each other’s work, painted, sketched and socialized. By 1880 the group was so well established that they decided to incorporate. The name, The Salmagundi Sketch Club, was inspired by Washington Irving’s celebrated Salmagundi Papers of wit and wisdom. The Club became an important venue in New York City for art exhibitions. Swigert is an uncommon signer, either alone or with his Apollo 13 crewmates. COA Scott Cornish and R&R COA.
