Description

Writing to a Civil War veteran on a famous painting of the Battle of Gettysburg

Distinguished Union general (1815–1872) best known for leading his troops to a commanding victory over Lee’s Confederates at Gettysburg in one of the pivotal battles of the Civil War. LS signed “Geo. G. Meade,” one page, 5 x 8, Military Division of the Atlantic letterhead, January 9, 1870. Meade writes to John Birkinbine. In full: “Please accept my thanks for your attention in sending me the slip from the Star alluding to Rothermel’s picture.” Meade is evidently referring to the massive oil painting Battle of Gettysburg by the eminent American artist Peter F. Rothermel (1817–1895), which now hangs in the State Museum of Pennsylvania. Matted with an unsigned reproduction photo and Birkinbine’s original 1913 certificate of membership in the George G. Meade Post No. 1 of the Pennsylvania GAR to an overall size of 17 x 17. A few light stains and brush to one word of text, otherwise fine. The signature is bold, dark, and completely unaffected. R&R COA.
