TLS signed “Irving,” one page, 7.25 x 10.5, October 23, 1950. Berlin writes to multiple-Tony-winning producer Gilbert Miller (1884–1970) and his wife. In full: “Many thanks for that nice opening night wire. I caught a glimpse of you down front. I hope you liked the show. It seems to have gone over very big. Again, my thanks for your thoughtfulness.” The event Berlin alludes to was the opening night for his musical Call Me Madam, which premiered at the Imperial Theater on October 12, 1950. The show won four Tony Awards, including Best Score for Berlin himself and Best Actress in a Musical for Ethel Merman. Accompanied by an unsigned carbon of Miller’s reply. In fine condition, with a few wrinkles, staple holes with tiny rust spots, and ink notation (a handwritten draft of Gilbert’s reply) to blank bottom portion of letter. R&R COA.
