Description

Hitchcock he isn’t: Bloch criticizes legendary schlockmeister William Castle’s “leaden direction” of a film based on his work

American novelist (1917–1994) best known as the author of Psycho, the novel upon which Alfred Hitchcock based his 1960 horror classic. ALS, one page both sides, 7.25 x 10.5, airmail form letterhead, March 14, 1979. A letter to a fan in which Bloch discusses a number of his works. In part: “I wonder which version of ‘The Scarf’ you have read. The original … has a different chapter-order up front and a different ending from the paperback version…. ‘The Couch’ is based on a screen treatment by Blake Edwards, so the ending isn’t my idea…. I wrote ‘The Night-Walker’ as a screenplay…. Unfortunately, the low budget and [William] Castle’s leaden direction didn’t bring about the effect I’d hoped for.” Bloch then goes on to review recent and upcoming publications and travel plans. In fine condition, with light handling and postal wear. R&R COA.
