Description

Blasting the press in the year of his second presidential defeat: “The newspaper diagrams of President Eisenhower’s insides ... seem to me to have exceeded the tolerances”

TLS, two pages, 7.25 x 10.5, January 10, 1956. Stevenson writes to Vanessa Brown. In part: “I am sure you will agree with me that it is almost intolerably distasteful to be so perpetually exposed. The newspaper diagrams of President Eisenhower’s insides not long ago seem to me to have exceeded the tolerances. However, I have no doubt that the public relations gentlemen will humanize me and expose me to the point of regurgitation—at least by me!—if they can. Just this morning I looked up in the commutation train and a flash bulb went off in my eyes and the newspaper photographer remarked: ‘Just wanted to show you riding with the common people, Guv….’” Light paperclip stain to top edge, otherwise fine condition.
