Description

AMERICAN MOSES: The charismatic Mormon prophet and first Governor of Utah appoints a Commissioner of Deeds

Religious leader (1801–1877) who became leader of the Mormon Church in 1844 after its founder, Joseph Smith, was shot and killed by a mob of angry opponents. A charismatic and powerful leader, Young led the mass migration of Mormons to the Great Salt Lake Valley in Utah, establishing the church’s stronghold in that state. By the time of Young’s death, the Mormon population in Utah had reached 140,000, and the leader’s own legacy included twenty-seven wives and fifty-six children. In December 2006, a panel of scholars and historians assembled by Atlantic magazine included Young in the roster of the 100 Most Influential Americans of All Time. Scarce LS, one page, 7.75 x 9.25, September 30, 1854. Young, as governor, writes to John F. Callun, Esq. In full: “In compliance with your written request to Hon. John M. Bemhisel, our Delegate in Congress, I enclose you a Commission to act in the Office of Commissioner of Deeds in the City of Washington for the Territory of Utah. Upon the receipt of your Commission, you will please forward me your Oath of Office, and such other papers as your laws may require in such cases.” In good to very good condition, with folds (one lightly touching signature), chips and small edge tears (tiny internal tear touching first name), a few small stains, scattered slight feathering to text, and light wrinkling and soiling. The signature is clear and otherwise unaffected. LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
