Description

Literary landlord: Voltaire attempts to collect rent due

French philosopher and author (1694–1778), born François-Marie Arouet, whose wit, literary skill, and originality of thought made him one of the most distinctive and influential figures of the Enlightenment. An ardent activist and defender of civil liberties, he wrote prolifically, producing scores of important works on philosophy, history, and science, and satirizing religion, politics, and social institutions. His most enduring work, the “picaresque” novel Candide (1759), has attained a secure place in the canon of Western literature. Scarce manuscript DS in French, one 4 x 6 page affixed to a larger sheet, July 3, 1773. A financial statement outlining monies owed him for rent up to the end of June 1773 by Monsieur Rozé, “receveur des domaines” for Charles Eugene, Duke of Würtemberg in Colmar. Mounting as noted above and a hint of subtle scattered soiling and wrinkling, otherwise fine condition. Quite uncommon and beautifully signed! LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
