Eminent American writer (1809–1894) best known for his collection The Autocrat of the Breakfast Table and the much-anthologized poem “The Chambered Nautilus.” AQS on an off-white 6.75 x 4.5 page, signed “Oliver Wendell Holmes” and dated Boston, March 27, 1870. Holmes pens the final stanza from “The Chambered Nautilus.” In full: “Build thee more stately mansions, O my soul, as the swift seasons roll! Leave thy low-vaulted past! Let each new temple, nobler than the last, That thee from heaven with a dome more fast, Till then at length art free, Leaving thine outgrown shell by life’s unresting sea!” Light vertical folds (one touching signature) and light rippling, otherwise fine condition.
