American author (1783–1859) best known for his stories “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” and “Rip Van Winkle.” ALS signed “W. Irving,” one page, 3.5 x 4.5, May 16, 1821. Irving, then in Paris, writes to Monsieur A. Hillhouse, regretting that he was out when Hillhouse called, providing an address, and hoping to see him before Irving leaves the city. A hint of mild wrinkling and toning, and small loss to integral address leaf, otherwise fine condition. R&R COA.
