German general, commander of the elite Panzer Führer-Begleitbrigade during the Battle of the Bulge. He was Hitler’s hero during the assassination attempt July 20, 1944. He took control of all ministries in Berlin; his telephone conversation with Hitler at Rastenburg was broadcast nationally to inform the public that Hitler had not been killed.
