Description

A valuable Czech: Dvorák endorses his paycheck from the National Conservatory in New York

Endorsed check, “Antonin Dvorák,” on the reverse of a 8.5 x 3.25 check made out to him from the National Conservatory of Music for $937.50, January 31, 1893. The check is evidently related to payment of Dvorák’s salary at the Conservatory, where he was director from 1892 to 1895. At the time he cashed this check, Dvorák was in the midst of composing what his arguably his best-known and most beloved work, the Symphony No. 9 (“From the New World”). Accompanied by an unsigned vintage postcard photo. A fantastic association! In fine condition, with usual bank stamps and cut cancellation (well away from signature), mild toning and soiling, and small hole near but not touching signature. LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
