He should know: Dickens signs a certificate for “proficiency in English Grammar & Composition” just months before his passing

English novelist and the author of such classics as Oliver Twist, A Tale of Two Cities and David Copperfield. DS, one page, 4.5 x 7, Birmingham and Midland Institute letterhead, January 10, 1870. Document signed as president of the Birmingham and Midland Institute, awarding a “Prize for Proficiency in English Grammar & Composition” to Frederick Hathaway. In fine condition, with only the slightest hint of scatterd soiling. The Birmingham and Midland Institute was a pioneer of adult scientific and technical education (General Industrial, Commercial and Music) and today offers Arts and Science lectures, exhibitions and concerts. Dickens was the sixteenth president of the Institute, elected in 1869. This certificate was signed only five months prior to his death from a stroke. LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
