ALS, one page, 4.5 x 7, March 3, 1846. Buchanan accepts a dinner invitation from Robert[?] Beale. In full: “I have long been threatening to come up and take a purely private family dinner with you. I can do so tomorrow or the next day or the next. Please let me know which of these days, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday will best suit yr. convenience. I cannot dine before 4 o’clock. Let it be private.” The integral leaf bears the name “Mr. Robert Beale” in Buchanan’s hand (though, at the foot of the text, the recipient is given as “W. Beale”).
