Unsigned letter in Garbo’s hand, two pages both sides in pencil, 7.25 x 10.5, Ritz Tower, New York letterhead, no date [postmarked November 9, 1943]. Garbo, then very recently retired, writes to actor Gilbert Roland, whom biographers have recently confirmed was involved in a love affair with the actress in the summer of 1943. In part [Garbo’s misspellings and syntax retained]: “Thank you for these sweet flowers. I am so sorry, but I was in the place of my people. But I had to do that also so it is up to gird whatever happens. I am about the same, sorry to say. That’s why I haven’t called you. If you spoke to me you would hear the same nasal tone and all. I don’t suppose the climat here like me or something. It is your birthday today I think, and I can only wish you a very happy new year. And the war will be over soon and perhaps next birthday I will be able to wish you goodness in person, in the sun somewhere. Please don’t have to much whiskey, because it dosn’t call for that. A birthday I mean. And please take care of you, and don’t be unhappy. It is not good to be that. I know. And you have moved away also. If you would want terribly to call me on your day I will try to be home at 6–7. But I am not sure to be here and then you will be sad.
