Description

Channel chums: The Beatles sign a studio pass at a 1965 British television appearance

Printed ABC Television Ltd. [UK] studio pass printed on red cardboard, 3.5 x 2.5, signed on the reverse by all four with the same ballpoint ink: Paul McCartney, George Harrison, John Lennon, and Ringo Starr. The pass, which bears the serial number 63 and the printed date of June 1965, reads, “The bearer of this pass is engaged on duties connected with the television production of ‘Blackpool Night Out.’ ABC Television Ltd., unrelated to the American network, was instead one of the earliest commercial enterprises to compete with the state-run monopoly on British television held by the BBC. “Blackpool Night Out” was a popular variety show, most of whose episodes are now famously lost. The signatures were most likely obtained on August 1, 1965, on which day the Beatles made their second and final appearance on the show. Two weeks later, they flew to America for a repeat appearance on the Ed Sullivan show, following up their unprecedented triumphant American debut of the previous year. The slightest hint of edge wear, some subtle bends touching signatures (though scarcely affecting appearance), and first letter of Paul’s signature a bit on the light side, otherwise fine, visually appealing condition. LOA Roger Epperson/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
