Description

An artist draws a blank

Distinguished American-born artist (1856–1925) who spent most of his career as an expatriate in Europe. While he painted a variety of subjects in various media, his fame rests primarily on his evocative, penetrating society portraits. ALS signed “John S. Sargent,” one page both sides, 4.5 x 7.25, December 18. Sargent replies to a request regarding his portrait of Edwin Booth. In part, “I do not know whether my portrait of Edwin Booth was ever photographed or reproduced so that I cannot help you in your desire to include it in your memoirs of the Player’s Club.” In fine condition, with light show-through from bold text on reverse and a bisecting horizontal mailing fold. R&R COA.
