American political cartoonist and illustrator (1840–1902) best known for devising the donkey and elephant symbols of the Democratic and Republican parties and the familiar “American” version of Santa Claus. Ink signature, “Th. Nast, March 13, 1876,” on a white 3.5 x 2.25 card. Matted together with an original Nast engraving of a G.O.P. elephant to an overall size of 13.75 x 19.5.
