Description

The Swedish Nightingale sends greetings in French from London

Celebrated soprano (1820–1887), known as the Swedish Nightingale, who, under the management of impresario P. T. Barnum, became the most renowned and highly paid singer of her day. Her 1850 singing engagement in Washington, D.C. was attended by the justices of the Supreme Court, and the excitement her visit generated led to the adjournment of Congress. Ink signature, “Jenny Lind, Londres, le 9 juin 1847,” on an off-white 4.5 x 7 sheet. The reverse bears a British one-penny postage stamp and June 9, 1847 postmark from Old Brompton. In fine condition, with mild wrinkling, light scattered soiling, and mailing fold very slightly touching one letter. R&R COA.
