Description

Approving a furlough for a soldier wounded at Stone River

Union general (1816–1870) whose most decisive victory earned him the sobriquet "Rock of Chickamauga.” Ink endorsement, “Geo. H. Thomas, Maj. Genl. USA, Comdg.,” on the adjoining leaf of a letter to Lt. Col. C. Goddard, 7.75 x 9.75, July 29, 1863. Thomas pens his approval for a furlough requested in the letter, which reads, in part: “Walter F. Hallock of my company … was wounded in the eye by a piece of shell at the Battle of Stone River, and taken prisoner. After his release he was proffered a discharge but refused to accept it preferring to remain in the service…. Small fragments of the shell still remain in and about the eye occasioning him great pain and incapacitating him to some extent for duty.” In fair condition, with separations at folds (tape repairs to reverse), heavy toning, scattered staining, and losses to one edge affecting several words of letter. Despite these faults, Thomas’ endorsement is clear, dark, and virtually unaffected. R&R COA.
