Highly regarded American poet (1794–1878) of such much-anthologized works as “Thanatopsis.” Apart from his literary activities, Bryant was also an ardent abolition activist and one of the founders of the Republican Party. In part: “It is my habit to answer requests for my autograph as soon as I receive them. I find your note of the 11th of November among my papers, without the usual memorandum indicating that an answer has been sent. I hasten therefore to write, and hope that this note will be precisely what your daughter desires.
