Description

Friend of collectors: “It is my habit to answer requests for my autograph as soon as I receive them”

Highly regarded American poet (1794–1878) of such much-anthologized works as “Thanatopsis.” Apart from his literary activities, Bryant was also an ardent abolition activist and one of the founders of the Republican Party. ALS signed “W. C. Bryant,” one lightly lined page, 5 x 8, December 14, 1868. Bryant writes to George L. Andrew, Esq. In part: “It is my habit to answer requests for my autograph as soon as I receive them. I find your note of the 11th of November among my papers, without the usual memorandum indicating that an answer has been sent. I hasten therefore to write, and hope that this note will be precisely what your daughter desires. If not I will send her any thing else in the way of manuscript from my pen.” A few small spots to blank portion, otherwise fine, bright condition. R&R COA.
