British soldier and statesman (1769–1852) who earned immortality for his stunning defeat of Napoleon at Waterloo and who later served in the British government, including a brief tenure as Prime Minister. ALS signed “Wellington,” three pages on two adjoining thinly-black-bordered sheets, 7.25 x 9, May 23, 1821. Wellington writes to Lionel Hervey in Madrid in his typical difficult-to-decipher hand, regarding his own brother’s departure from Madrid and a financial matter. In good condition, with tears (some restored) touching several words of the text, scattered toning, wrinkling, and seal-related loss to blank portion of signed page. The signature is clear and dark. R&R COA.
