Uncommon Richard Dobbs Spaight land grant

Signer of the Constitution, later served as Governor and Congressman who died following injuries sustained in a duel with John Stanly, the Federalist Congressman who succeeded him in the House of Representatives. DS, signed “Rich: Dobbs Spaight,” one page, 16.5 x 11.5, State of North Carolina letterhead, November 14, 1795. Land grant indicating the sum of thirty shillings for every hundred acres, “paid into our treasury by John Porterfield… Witness Richard Dobbs Spaight, Esquire, our Governor, Captain-General and Commander in Chief.” Rider is attached to front of document via the ribbon from the raised and intact wax seal. In very good condition, with a few small areas of paper loss along document folds, scattered light toning and a few small notations. Dobbs’ signature is bold and prevalent along bottom of document.
