Description

A sober moment for the Material Girl: “My best friend died of AIDS. Watching him die was the most frightening experience of my life”

Handwritten message evidently intended as a public service testimonial, signed “Love, Madonna,” one light pink page, 8.5 x 11, no date [circa late 1980s–early 1990s]. The text reads in full: “Last year my best friend died of AIDS. Watching him die was the most frightening experience of my life. Right now there is no cure for AIDS but there is a way to stop it from spreading. Don’t let fear keep you from knowing the facts. Read this booklet—then give it to your best friend. It just might save his or her life …. it just might save your own.” The “best friend” Madonna refers to was likely one of two men: singer Martin Burgoyne, her close friend and onetime roommate, who died in 1986 at the age of 23, or Christopher Flynn, her dance teacher and mentor, who died of AIDS in 1990. In very good condition, with folds, scattered creases, and a few spots of mild soiling. The writing is dark and clear, and, with proper matting and framing, the item will present nicely, indeed.
