German poet (1798–1874) best known as the author of “Das Lied der Deutschen” (a.k.a. “Deutschland über alles”), the national anthem of Germany. AQS in German, a stanza from his poem “Schön Anni [Beautiful Anni],” signed “Hoffman von Fallersleben” and dated Kothen, June 30, 1848. The text translates as follows: “‘Beautiful Anni, Beautiful Anni,’ the rich farmer spoke. ‘You are my only child; you can marry whomever your heart may win.’” Faint show-through at corners from mounting remnants on reverse, otherwise clean and fine.
