Description

Rallying fellow Republicans re: legislative nominations: “I beg of you to allow no mistakes to be made”

LS signed “Benj. Harrison,” two pages, 7.5 x 9.75, Senate Chamber letterhead, April 14, 1886. Harrison writes to Thomas H. Martin in Lebanon, Indiana. In part: “I hope the Republicans in your County have been carefully considering the question of Legislative nominations. I beg of you to allow no mistakes to be made. Consult and agree as to who is the best and strongest man—all things considered, and if he is unwilling to make the race reason with him and show him how much depends on our success. Immediate attention should be given to this matter…. Is there any distraction in our own ranks, or the ranks of our adversaries, and the causes, if any?… Is the Prohibition movement getting any hold with you?” The letter was evidently intended for distribution to party movers and shakers nationwide, and the text appears to be produced in facsimile via an early mimeograph process, a technology which Thomas Edison patented in 1876. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope. Folds (pinholes at intersections; one fold touching signature), otherwise fine, clean condition. Though the text is slightly light as a result of the duplication process, the signature (in a different color ink) is bold and dark. R&R COA.
