King of Great Britain and Ireland from 1830 to 1837 who earned the sobriquet “Sailor King” for his youthful service in the Royal Navy. His reign, though short, was marked by much social progress, including laws restricting child labor, the abolition of slavery throughout the British Empire, and the reformation of the British electoral system. Leaving no direct heir upon his death in 1837, he was succeeded by his niece, Victoria, who reigned for the remainder of the century. ALS signed “William,” one page both sides, 7.25 x 9.25, December 21, 1827. William writes to Clifford. In part: “You cannot more sincerely regret than I do that the need presented me … to Plymouth.… Under the present state of affairs I am sure that you will retain leave at the moment you can…. As Dennison has determined going to India [I] shan’t be very sorry if Lady Charlotte is detained by ill health.” In fine condition, with light wrinkling and one mailing fold touching signature.
