Description

“Light-Horse Harry” signs a Virginia militia appointment

Revolutionary War hero (1756–1818), father of Robert E. Lee, who captured British posts in New York and in the South and who later served in the Continental Congress. Partially printed DS, signed “Henry Lee,” one page, 7.75 x 12.5, May 7, 1793. A document appointed Andrew Fulton ensign in the First Battalion of the Thirty-Second Regiment of the Virginia Militia. The paper seal is intact at lower left. In good condition, with light folds touching signature, separations along folds (archivally reinforced from the reverse; old tape stains showing through), and scattered wrinkles, chips, and small tears. Many of the faults can easily be matted out, and the signature itself is large, bold, and dark. LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
